For Your Eyes Only 35mm Trailer

This 35mm trailer for For Your Eyes OnlyFor Your Eyes Only (1981), Roger Moore's fifth outing as James Bond, was actually found spliced to the start of a 1981 re-release print of Heaven's Gate, and generously donated to this site by the owner of that print. If you're a regular visitor to this site you'll know that a large part of our raison d'être is preservation of James Bond 007 artitifacts. Many of the older magazines, TV Shows and videos that we feature on the site (this is our 299th post!) are now over 30 years old. Books, magazines, VHS tapes, newspaper articles and even 35mm film reels do not last forever, but often these materials can be captured digitally to share with the next generation of James Bond fans. We don't usually take the time to restore 35mm film trailers because as we pointed out with The Living DaylightsThe Living Daylights Trailer, a much higher quality version of most trailers can usually be found on the official DVD or Blu-ray release. However, as a gift to our generous donator not only did we make an effort to restore this print, but, for educational purposes we will also show you the condition it arrived in...

So, here is how the print looked when we received it:

Certain film stocks (particularly pre-1982 Kodak/Eastman) fade to red over time, but in spite of that most of the color information is still hidden away. The whites are a little too bright - Q branch is looking into that - but on the whole it turned out pretty well:

Some of you may prefer that grungy quality, but just to show you what can be done, here is the same print after some additional digital cleanup:

Finally, just because we love comparison videos, here is a quick before and after bonus video:

So, the next time you come across a horribly faded, dirty piece of film don't despair! And if that piece of film happens to have James Bond on it, feel free to let us know. We'll be happy to transfer it, preserve it and maybe even restore it for you... And hey, what else are you going to do with it?
